Lemoore High's Sierra wrestles toward Olympic dream

Sierra opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over Miguel Sanchez. The two-time Bee All-Star and reigning California 152-pound champion then edged defending champion Salvador Morales 3-2, 3-2 in the semifinals.

"That gave me a momentum boost," Sierra said. "But I didn't want to get too excited. I tried to stay humble."

Sierra captured the title with a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over former Pan-American Games participant Jose Aramburo, becoming an instant celebrity in his mother's homeland.

"I had little kids running up and asking for my autograph, and people in the stands wanted to take pictures with me," Sierra said. "It was fun. I had a great time. The people there really liked me."

Sierra caught the attention of Mexico's Olympic wrestling officials by going 42-1 during his senior season, culminated by his 6-4 victory over Del Oro's Jesse Stafford for the 152-pound state title. Sierra was named the state tournament's Champion of Champions by his peers.
